Lafayette, Colorado – WOW! Children’s Museum (World of Wonder) today announced upcoming events and programs at the Museum for the month of May.  Unless otherwise noted, all listed events and programs are included with Museum admission.

“Lei Day” Hula Performance – Sunday, May 1st

Time: 2:00pm

Celebrate Lei Day (May Day in Hawaii) with a special hula performance by Keaka O Kalani I Na Mauna, a hula and Polynesian dance school in Boulder.  The school’s mission is to pass on the aloha spirit as well as an appreciation for Hawaiian and Polynesian dance, language and culture.  This special program is part of the “WOW! Goes Around the World” series, sponsored by Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission and is included with Museum admission.

Mountain Kids Story Time – Every Thursday at Noon

Time: 12:00pm

Miss Kristin from Mountain Kids will host a fun weekly story time with bubbles, short stories and a sing-a-long with shakers. This active and engaging story time will make reading fun for young learners!  Included with Museum admission.                                                             

Get Growing! Garden Program – Thursday, May 5th

Time: 11:30am

Join the farmers from Ollin Farms for our first garden program of the season!  Learn what plants need to grow and lend a helping hand to pull weeds, till the soil and plant veggies in our garden.  Garden program activities are included with Museum admission.

Toddlerpalooza! – Saturday, May 7th

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm

Join WOW! as we celebrate all things toddler! Toddler geared activities include marble painting in the Art Room, Kidsong music program, snacks provided by Happy Family, and special appearances by Popsicle the SCFD Polar Bear and Captain Bula of the Zula Patrol.  All Toddlerpalooza activities are included with Museum admission!

Integral Steps Presents Music & Movement – Friday, May 13th  

Time: 1:00pm

High energy, exciting and fun, this program allows children to dance and play through a combination of music, movement, biology, and art!  This special program is presented by Emma Shubin of Integral Steps and is included with Museum admission.

Sensory Friendly Playtime – Sunday, May 15th

Time: 9:30am-11:30am

Sensory Friendly Playtime is a special Museum event for children with autism spectrum or sensory processing disorders.  WOW! will limit admission to 20 families, turn down sounds and lights, and provide adaptive equipment to offer a safe and fun experience for all!  Reservations are required and space is limited.  To reserve a space contact, olivia@wowchildrensmuseum.org.  Admission is free for this special program thanks to KidSpot Pediatric Therapies and WOW!’s donor supported Scholarship Program.

Investigating Dinosaurs Exhibit – Opening Tuesday, May 17th

In the return of the Investigating Dinosaurs exhibit, young visitors can become Junior Paleontologists and explore how we know what we know about dinosaurs.  How do we know what dinosaurs looked like, how they walked or where they lived? Within five interactive stations, children will have the opportunity to uncover a dinosaur fossil, puzzle together a dinosaur skeleton, compare your footprints to a dinosaur print, create a landscape for dinosaurs to live in and make a dinosaur rubbing.  This engaging exhibit provides many ways for children to use critical thinking skills such as analyzing evidence and logical reasoning, as well as open-ended imaginative play.

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm each day

This month’s topic: Investigating Dinosaurs

Discover your inner scientist!  Drop-in and explore our monthly hands-on science program.  This month, in celebration of our Investigating Dinosaurs exhibit, we’re learning all about dinosaurs! Discovery Days activities are included with Museum admission.

Introducing “WOW! Goes Around the World”

Grab your suitcases and update that Passport photo because WOW! is setting off for a trip around the world! This year, WOW! is proud to host a series of special events entitled “WOW! Goes Around the World.” We will be exploring countries and cultures near and far through storytelling, dance, art, and more! This series is generously sponsored by the Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission (LCAC).

  • April 29th, 11:30am– Colorado Educational Theater presents “Friends & Fables–Stories Worth Sharing!” explores Germany and Greece.
  • May 1st, 2:00pm– “Lei Day” Hula Performance by Boulder’s Keaka O Kalani I Na Mauna hula and Polynesian dance school.
  • July 29th, 11:00– “Samurai Story” Japanese musical storytelling with Yoko Hiraoka with special thanks to Think 360 Arts.
  • September 30th, 11:30 am– Colorado Educational Theater presents “Tales of Wonder” with more stories from around the globe.
  • November 1st, 11:00am– Boulder History Museum’s Dia de los Muertos celebration introduces children to Mexico’s Day of the Dead.

Fancy Schmancy Family Fundraiser – Sunday, April 10th

Time: 3:00pm-5:00pm

Save the date for our 2nd Annual Fancy Schmancy Family Fundraiser! Bring the whole family to WOW! for food, fun, music and fanciness with all proceeds benefiting the exhibits of the Museum.  Enjoy light appetizers and desserts, musical performance its and program by dynamic duo Jeff & Paige, fabulous silent auction, craft activities and of course playtime in the Museum!

Itsy Bitsy Bugs Program – Tuesday, April 12th

Time: 10:00am

Presented by the Butterfly Pavilion, this program is guaranteed to keep your toddlers fluttering, hopping, and singing.  Includes puppets, music, and of course, live bugs to keep your tots buzzing with excitement!  This special program is included with Museum admission.

Colorado Educational Theater Presents “Fables & Friends – Stories Worth Sharing!” – Friday, April 29th

Time: 11:30am

Tales of animals, both foolish and wise, will once again delight and inspire early learners with a program from Colorado Educational Theater. Children will participate in bringing stories from Germany and Greece to life through creative movement, mime, and songs. This program is a part of the “WOW! Goes Around the World” series, sponsored by Lafayette Cultural Arts Council and is included with Museum admission.

NanoDays Science Program – March 21st, March 22nd and March 23rd

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm

Join us for NanoDays, celebrating the science of the small! Explore how to make things invisible, investigate new nano products and materials, make nano crafts to keep, and launch nano particles with an air cannon!  Organized by NISE Net, NanoDays is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering.  NanoDays activities are included with Museum admission.

Wanted: Children’s Art Instructor!

Update – 3/29/16:

Thank you for your interest in submitting an art instructor proposal.  Unfortunately we were not able to apply for the arts grant that would have funded this program.  At this time, we are no longer accepting proposal submissions.  We do hope to launch a year long art class program in the future!  Stay tuned!

Are you a Member of WOW! Children’s Museum and would like to provide feedback about our exhibits and programs? Join our Member Think Tank!

As a Think Tank member, you’ll attend meetings several times a year where you can give us advice, ideas, and feedback about current and future plans of the Museum. Children are welcome at these meetings- they help Museum staff with prototyping exhibits, and child care is provided during Think Tank meetings.

Meetings are on Mondays when the Museum is closed, and Think Tank members are not required to attend every meeting.

If you’re interested in giving back and joining the Think Tank, please contact Olivia Ameigh, Development Director.

Exploring Weather

At WOW! this month, we are celebrating Colorado Weather! Please join us to try some hands-on science activities about weather in our Discovery Days Science Program on Tuesday February 16th and Wednesday February 17th from 10:00am-12:00pm on both days.  Then check out our weather-related exhibits to learn more about clouds, precipitation, wind, temperature, the Sun and other weather phenomena:

  • The Zula Patrol: Mission Weather Exhibit (on display until May 8, 2016)
  • SunSational Exhibit
  • Blowing in the Wind Exhibit

On Display: January 27th to May 8th 2016

The Zula Patrol, those intergalactic fact-gatherers, have been planet-hopping across the Solar System, and they’ve finally landed on Earth to study the weather on our home planet. Captain Bula and his friends invite you to this hands-on, interactive exhibit to learn all about clouds, precipitation, wind, temperature, and other weather phenomena!

The Zula Patrol: Mission Weather was designed and developed by Zula USA LLC in partnership with Thinkwell Design. The exhibit will be on display at WOW! from January 27th to May 8th 2016.

The Museum will be closed on Monday, January 25th and Tuesday, January 26th for Zula Patrol: Mission Weather exhibit installation.

Color My World Program – Wednesday, January 13th

Time: 11:00am

In this workshop presented by the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council (CHAC), children will explore the world of color by hearing the ancient Mayan/Aztec legend of how the world got its color.  Children will learn and recognize color names in both English and Spanish, and invent their own colors as they make colorful oil pastel paintings.  This special program is geared for children in Pre-K to 1st Grade but all ages are welcome!
