Super Heroes Unite!

June 4th marked the start of the Summer 2013 Service Learning Program in partnership with Project YES.

This summer local elementary students will meet at the Museum to play games, make art projects, and create their very own comic book superhero that will save our planet from the villains of pollution, rising water levels, and waste!

This week students used recyclable items from the Museum’s Art Room activity bins to make a superhero costume, followed by a costume show and tell. Art Coordinator Kate Simpson worked with students to design wrist cuffs, capes, and masks while students talked about the dangers of pollution and considered what super powers would be handy when fighting pollution and waste.

“It was fantastic to watch as the students solved design problems, experimented with different approaches to sewing and taping, and got swept up in the fun of creating super powers!” said Kate Simpson, WOW! Art Coordinator.

Next week Project YES students will start work on the new Art Room mural “I love art because…”. The Mural will be installed using cast off and recycled paint, and the students will have the chance to paint their quote directly on the art room wall.

WOW! Craft Club & Art Room Grand Re-Opening – June 1^st

Time: 11:00am-1:00pm

Help us celebrate the grand re-opening of the WOW! Art Room.  Enjoy special art and craft activities and take home projects.  In this month’s Craft Club, design a dragon and decorate with tissue paper and paints!  Craft Club is included with Museum admission.

Get Growing! Garden Program with Ollin Farms – June 13^th

Time: 10:00am-11:00am

Join the farmers from Ollin Farms as they tend to WOW!’s summer garden.  Kids can watch and even lend a helping hand as weeds are pulled, soil is tilled and new veggies are planted!   Garden program is included with Museum admission.

The Art of Puppetry Workshop – June 14^th

Time: 10:00am-11:30am

Enjoy a puppeteer workshop with Public Works Theatre Co. artistic director Sondra Blanchard.  After the show, kids can head over to the art room to make a puppet of your own!  A wide range of age-appropriate puppet-making materials will be available. This workshop is included with Museum admission.

June Discovery Days – June 18^th & June 19^th

Time: 10:00am-1:00pm each day

This month’s theme: Our Animal Friends

Discover your inner scientist!  Drop-in and explore our monthly informal hands-on science program.  This month, we’re learning about animals and their habitats!  Denver Zoo will join us as a special guest with live animals on June 18^th from 10:00am-12:00pm.  Discovery Days activities are open for exploration from 10:00am-1:00pm and are included with Museum admission.

Happy Birthday to Lu! – June 29^th

Time: 11:00am-Noon

WOW! is throwing a birthday bash for one very special reptile – our bearded dragon Lulu!  The Colorado Reptile Humane Society with bring along some of Lulu’s reptile friends and will teach visitors what reptiles like to eat, what it means to be cold-blooded and why some shed their skin.  All activities are included with Museum admission.

Get out of the house and get into our garden! This Friday, May 9th at 10:30am will be the kickoff to our summer garden program, Get Growing! with Ollin Farms. Kids can come help the farmers from Ollin Farms plant and prepare our garden for the upcoming season. Lafayette, Colorado – WOW! Children’s Museum (World of Wonder) is pleased to announce that the Museum has received a $2,000 grant from the Boulder Flatirons Rotary Club.  WOW! will use this grant to support the display of Go Figure!, a traveling exhibit on display at the Museum, September to November 2013.  Go Figure! is a national traveling exhibit created by Minnesota Children’s Museum and the American Library Association.  The exhibit introduces early math concepts, such as sorting and measuring, through kid-sized environments inspired by familiar children’s books.

Friday, May 3rd at 11am, Happy Family Foods will present a program about kid’s nutrition, complete with information about organic foods, food groups, and and what foods and ingredients to avoid. Participants will also get to sample products from Happy Family’s line of organic baby and children’s food as well as enter to win a door prize from Happy Family!
