Science Class Field Trips

IMAG1367

Add a science class to your field trip! Classes are 30 minutes long, are held during your two-hour self-guided field trip, and are facilitated by Museum Education staff.

Our hands-on experiences are highly engaging, emphasizing exploration over explanation. Savvy teachers use our programs to introduce a new topic rather than as a culminating event after studying that unit. Many of our science classes complement a specific exhibit to extend the learning experience. Choose one topic from our most popular topics shown below!

To schedule a science class field trip, please click here to use our request form or contact the Museum Front Desk at (303) 604-2424.

Class Topics:

Use Your Senses – NEW!
Life Science, age 3-5 years old

See, smell, hear, taste, touch. Learn about the senses and how to keep them healthy. Use them to build a puzzle as high as you can reach and explore a giant Braille alphabet carved in wood. Make elephant ears to take with you and remind you to listen carefully. This complements The Little Clinic Exhibit about children’s health and wellness.

One Inch at a Time – NEW!
Mathematics, age 3-5 years old

Practice measurement using “inchworms” as well as standardized tools like rulers and measuring tape. Explore relationships and comparisons between objects of different sizes. WOW! is grateful for support from LEAP into Science, a science and literacy program developed by The Franklin Institute and the Free Library of Philadelphia with support from the National Science Foundation.

Romping Stomping Dinosaurs
Life Science, Mathematics, age 3 years old to 1st Grade

Little learners practice counting and comparing. Hold a baby Stegosaurus. Compare your foot to big and small dinosaur tracks. Look inside a dinosaur’s lunchbox. Make a dinosaur fossil craft!

Magical Magnets
Physical Science, age 3 years old to 3rd Grade

Investigate the magical push and pull of magnetism in this station-based class that complements our Magnet exhibit. WOW! is grateful for support from LEAP into Science, a science and literacy program developed by The Franklin Institute and the Free Library of Philadelphia with support from the National Science Foundation.

Balance and Motion
Physical Science, age 3 years old to 3rd Grade

Explore the world of things that spin, roll, balance, and move. Activities complement and extend the topics covered in the FOSS Balance and Motion Unit.

Slime and Ooze
Physical Science, Grades K-3

Identify the characteristics of solids and liquids. Make your own slime to keep, and use it to explain the differences between a liquid and a solid. In the spirit of inquiry, the final product is intentionally ambiguous and encourages students to ask questions instead of just providing a “right answer”: their slime may behave as a liquid, a solid, or both (a non-Newtonian fluid) depending on how aggressively they mixed it and how we test its behavior. Activities complement and extend the topics covered in the FOSS Solids and Liquids Unit.

Blowing in the Wind
Physical Science, Earth Systems Science, Grades K-3

Explore the properties of air flow and air pressure. Create art that catches air, test it in our Blowing in the Wind Exhibit, then take it home with you. WOW! is grateful for support from LEAP into Science, a science and literacy program developed by The Franklin Institute and the Free Library of Philadelphia with support from the National Science Foundation.

Light & Shadow
Physical Science, Grades K-3

Explore light, shadows, and mirrors. Make a reflective craft and Sun jewelry to test and take home. This complements our Light & Shadow Exhibit.
